TiPb Apps 4.3: Street Fighter IV for iPhone (GDC 2010)

Screen shot 2010-03-10 at 5.20.02 AM

Live from GDC 2010 Rene talks to Tezuka-san, Street Fighter IV [$9.99 - iTunes link] iPhone producer for Capcom (via translator) about making Street Fighter for the iPhone and iPod touch, getting the controls right, and whether or not we might see Street Fighter for the iPad.

Tezuka-san points out how Capcom decided to make the controls very customizable, allowing users to choose whether they want the button low down, in the middle, or high up, and set the level of transparency. This means you can hold the iPhone or iPod touch anyway you like and set up the controls just the way you like.

I had a chance to play it just before release and while I got my butt kicked in multiplayer, the game looked gorgeous and handled very well. I could pull off what few moves I remembered from my childhood in the arcade, and I could resort to button (er… screen) mashing when all else failed. (Yes, just like my childhood in the arcade.)

For the iPad, they’re going to sit down and figure out how the controls work and what the experience is like on that screen with that form factor. If it makes sense, they’ll do it. If not, there are other Capcom games that certainly might. It’s all about the quality of the end product for them.

Zombie Castle Defender ‘ZombieSmash!’ Coming to iPhone and iPod touch

zombiesmash!

Whether you are a fan of the Castle Defender genre or Zombies, you are sure to love the soon to be released ZombieSmash! for iPhone and iPod touch.

In similar fashion to the very popular Plants vs Zombies, ZombieSmash! adds a few new tricks to Castle Defender games with the addition of some fancy ragdoll physics and excessive amounts of cartoon gore. Look for ZombieSmash! to drop in the App Store sometime this month for $1.99.

Check out the official trailer after the break!

Zen Bound 2 Coming To ALL The iDevices

ZB2_08_ComparisonWho would’ve guessed that one of the biggest App Store hits thus far would involve wrapping string around a wooden object? Apparently the success of the original Zen Bound even took developers by surprise. “We never expected the calm gameplay of wrapping wooden statues with rope to find such a great audience on the iPhone, much less win multiple awards over the year.”

Fortunately for us, the team over at Secret Exit announced Zen Bound 2 today, and it is specifically being tweaked to take advantage of the iPad’s graphic and size advantages. On top of that, Secret Exit has said that Zen Bound 2 “is both a sequel and a revision to the original, with more music from Ghost Monkey, new levels and new kinds of gameplay, but Zen Bound 2 also includes the original soundtrack and upgraded versions of all levels from the first game.”

Secret Exit expects Zen Bound 2 to launch right around the iPad launch date… my guess is that the launches will coincide. There’s no video trailer yet, but there are a ton of screenshots after the break. Enjoy!

TiPb Give Away: Slide-a-ma-jig Game for Kids

slide-a-ma-jig main

Slide-a-ma-jig [$0.99 - iTunes Link] is a game for the newest of iPhone users — the kids. You can slide your finger on the screen to switch between 30 different creature body parts as well as tap a button for different backgrounds. Give the iPhone a shake and you will see a random creature appear. There are sound effects as well to go with your new creatures.

To find out more about the application and how to enter the give-away, stay with us after the break.

I had my own little ones try out the game and my 4 year old stated, “Oh this guy is really silly, I like this game.” My 1 year old was able to swipe through the various body parts but then started to bite on the iPhone so I had to take it away. So while they both seemed to enjoy the game, if you give your iPhone to your one year old, its at your own risk…

On the Lucky Radish Amusements website website they also have a printable template where you can create your own pen and paper slide-a-ma-jig.

Now for the promo code givea-way — let us know how you use your iPhone to keep your kids occupied and we will chose three (3) of you at random to get the promo codes. (As usual, promo codes can only be redeemed via the US Apple Store, and they expire so if you get one — use it fast!)

AT&T: We’ll Carry iPhone for “Quite Some Time”, Variable Pricing, LTE in 2012

att_warp_speed

According to the Wall Street Journal, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson took the opportunity, while speaking at an investor conference, to once again talk about the iPhone remaining on his network, and also touch on the iPad, problems in New York and San Francisco, variable pricing, and Apple’s new darling, the iPad.

  • While Stephenson doesn’t seem to have insisted the iPhone would remain exclusive on AT&T, he does say the iPhone will remain an important part of their offerings for “quite some time”.
  • He’s pleases with the steps AT&T is taking to address network problems and dropped calls in New York and San Francisco. “We’re hitting our metrics,” he said. “I feel really good about our path.” And call quality should improve by mid-2010.
  • Stephenson claims AT&T is carrying half of US wireless traffic due to the amount of data use the iPhone generates. Carriers will have to eventually move to “variable pricing” so that heavy users are charged more and light users, less.
  • AT&T is “not in a tremendous hurry” to roll-out their 4G network; it won’t be widely available, and there won’t be a good amount of products using it, until 2012

So if we mash that all together, even if the iPhone also pops up elsewhere, you’ll still be able to get it on an improved AT&T network with tiered pricing (perhaps similar to the iPad’s $15 for 256MB, $30 for unlimited) until LTE is wide spread in 2012 and the iPhone 4G replaces everything.

How’s that grab you?

Rayman 2: The Great Escape now in App Store!

Rayman 2For those of us with fond memories of the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn comes Rayman 2. Yes, one of our favorite Mario 64 clones has made it to the iPhone [$6.99 - iTunes link].

Rayman has to escape the evil clutches of pirates that have taken over your world. Rayman plays in a 3D environment running, jumping and shooting energy to take down foes and restore peace to the world.

From the little time I have played with the title, the graphics and frame-rate are great, as well as the music. Controls are fine but could benefit from a sliding directional pad as I often found my thumb moving out of control range. However, I am getting used to it. If you are looking for some old-school 3D action platforming, check out Rayman 2 and let us know what you think!

ngmoco’s We Rule for iPhone hits Canadian App Store

We_Rule_0970

Once again, a new ngmoco’s game has hit the Canadian App Store first — this time it’s kingdom-builder We Rule [Free with in-app purchases - iTunes link]. Hey, there’s no Hulu or Google Voice in Canada, so fair’s fair!

Like all recent ngmoco games, We Rule leverages the social gaming element via their Plus+ network, and has in-app purchases for “Mojo” which basically speed up things like growing crops and building homes, so you can pay if you don’t want to wait. In this case, Mojo can run from $0.99 to for 1 to $49.00 for 800. You don’t have to buy it, you just have to be patient if you don’t.

It seems like you do have to log in to play, however, which is handy since you can keep one game going over multiple devices (like your iPhone and iPod touch, as long as they’re logged in to the same Plus+ account), but if you don’t care about that and just want to launch and play on your own, it’s an step you can’t skip.

No doubt ngmoco is doing what they do best here, taking a popular category of game and making it their own — and making it excellent for the iPhone OS platform. If you’re a fan of these types of farming, kingdom building games, you’ll likely be a big fan of We Rule.

Again, Canadian only for now, though @ngmoco is giving away codes to allow early US access on Twitter. If you download it — or score a code — let us know what you think!

Ton’o pictures and a video… after the break!

Associated Press App Coming to iPad

New York Times for iPad

MacRumors points us towards the Associated Press‘ announcement that they’re setting up a new digital unit to target “next wave of Internet-connected devices such as Apple’s iPad”.

The AP’s iPad app could compete with offerings from some of its member newspapers, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, which also are believed to be mulling whether to sell subscriptions on the iPad to take advantage of its format. [...] The plans reflect the news media’s hope — still untested — that consumers will be more willing to pay for content on the iPad and similar handheld devices than they have been on traditional computers that depend solely on Web browsers to surf the Internet.

There’s no definitive word on pricing, though it’s suggested it might start off free. Subscription, however, remains the goal of newspapers in order to support their news-gathering business.

Whether or not the continued talk of individual newspaper apps for the iPad, like the New York Times, means the odds for an Apple-centric solution like iBooks is diminishing is unknown.

Let us know which future you’re looking forward to, diverse App Store offerings, or a unified iNews Store?
