Apple iPhone game developer protests by raising price from $2.99 to $39.99

schiau

Schiau Studios, for this weekend, has raised the price of their game Alchemize to a whopping $39.99 from $2.99. You might be thinking that’s probably not the best business move, but there’s a really good reason behind the huge price increase — to tell everyone to bugger off and stop complaining about application and game prices. We’re not sure how many people have bought the game at the higher price, but again, it’s meant as more of a protest than anything else. If you can’t afford to buy an iPhone, BlackBerry, or Android application for a couple bones, or incessantly bitch about the pricing, you really should stop complaining about it. Or get a job. Or a higher paying one.

A Preview of ‘Rally Master Pro’ from FishLabs

rally master pro lense flare

Back in August we reported that FishLabs would be bringing the highly rated mobile title Rally Master Pro, which Pocket Gamer determined to be the best mobile game of 2008, to the iPhone and iPod touch.

The original mobile title has some of the best 3D graphics ever seen on a typical handset. The iPhone version, as FishLabs indicates, takes things to a whole new level with 4x the poly count of the original and enhanced particle effects and dynamic lighting.

Depending on the track surface and weather, a variety of dust, spray, and even dirt particles will be generated for each individual tire. The various kinds of particles act quite differently. On dry, dusty tracks the car leaves a massive cloud of dust while racing through a forest on a rainy day you can literrally see the mud flying.
….
Thanks to the high-powered 3D chips (OpenGL graphics acceleration) in the iPhone, we can light the vehicle in a variety of ways, depending on the weather: with lots of light and shadows when it’s sunny, diffuse when the sky is overcast, and correspondingly dim in rain and storm.

The iPhone release will include 27 courses and weather effects for sun, rain, and snow as well as options for tilt or touch (analog or digital) controls.

FishLabs was kind enough to provide us with a pre-release build of the iPhone version of Rally Master Pro to play around with and share a glimpse with our readers.

See our brief gameplay video that shows early play across several different tracks.

[ Full HD version | Low Bandwidth version ]

The developers emphasis that what you see above is indeed a pre-release with unfinalized controls, physics, and sound. As such, I'll refrain from critiquing the gameplay, but I can say that I've had a rather enjoyable time putting the game through its paces. Some parts of the various courses really take me back to days of spending hours in front of Sega Rally on the Saturn (which, in case you've not personally had the pleasure, is a very good thing).

What I've seen so far puts a rather optimistic light on the likelihood that the iPhone version will indeed go well beyond the mobile title.

FishLabs indicates that Rally Master Pro will hit the App Store sometime this autumn.

Weekly App Store Picks: October 10, 2009

It’s the weekend and I’m over in London investigating a host of new iPhone apps out later this year. In the meantime, I’ve hand-picked four of the latest releases from the App Store for you to check out.

canabalt

This week I’ve selected a smattering of fun games. My top pick for this week is Canabalt, plus I’ve also been looking at Nota, Tap Tap Revenge 3 and Real Football 2010.

Canabalt ($2.99)

app_canabaltEarlier this week Adobe announced that the latest version of Flash, version CS5, will support iPhone app development. What this means is that an app can be created using Flash and then effectively rendered out as an iPhone-compatible app file.

Ustwo, who I spoke to earlier this week, prototyped its minimalist designer game .™ in 48 hours using Flash. With CS5, developers will be able to handle prototyping and development without leaving Flash. What this means for us folk who download apps is that we’re on the cusp of another exciting period in iPhone development, especially in terms of gaming.

Which brings us to Canabalt, a game which debuted several weeks ago online in Flash form and has since been ported across the the iPhone. It’s a furious filmic rush as you dash across a futuristic rooftop, jumping buildings, dodging debris and trying to survive for as long as possible. This is one button gaming at its very best, a worthwhile download for all iPhone gamers.

Nota ($2.99)

app_notaThe iPhone has great potential as an e-learning tool, but so far, it feels like an unexplored area. It’s fair enough I suppose…developers need to make a living too and other app genres, such as games, seem like they have more potential for generating profit. It’s a shame though as there’s so much potential to create something wonderful for learning on the iPhone, something just like Nota.

Nota is a music learning tool. It’s got all the beginners stuff, covering notes and crochets and all that jazz, but it dips into the realms of advanced music theory too. There’s a comprehensive reference section containing music terminology, a music quiz with two difficulty levels and even a four octave piano with a real-time musical stave.

As a musician and producer myself I think it’s important to make learning music more accessible to everyone. The app’s rich selection of tools and toys, combined with a quality finish in terms of the visual design, make this a great investment for professional musicians and students alike.

Tap Tap Revenge 3 (99 cents)

app_ttr3The third iteration of Tap Tap Revenge touched down in the App Store earlier this week, but this time it’s going to cost you. The two previous iterations have been free but with the third game Tapulous is charging 99 cents, a paltry sum for such a feature-packed offering.

The game packs in all the usual TTR staples, such as online play, track downloads and competitions. There’s a refreshed track-listing bundled with it too, containing music from Fall Out Boy and Tiesto, alongside premium track downloads supplied by some seriously impressive names, including Smashing Pumpkins, Killers and Foo Fighters.

If you’re unfamiliar with the game, it can be summed up as Dance Dance Revolution for the iPhone. Instead of dancing with your feet, you tap with your fingers, plus there’s some shaking and tilting thrown in for good measure too. Regardless of whether or not you’ve got rhythm, if you love music, this is the game to download.

Real Soccer 2010 ($3.99)

app_real_soccerYet again, Gameloft has launched another game that’s terribly similar to a couple of other big name console franchises. This time the folks at Gameloft have taken their inspiration from the FIFA soccer franchise and the ISS Pro series.

Aside from the omission of real soccer team names — Manchester United becomes Man Red, for example — Real Soccer 2010 delivers everything you’d expect out of a console soccer game. There are real player names, a massive range of teams, a convincing in-game commentary system, single-player leagues as well as online matches and so much more.

Normally I’d condone this type of uninspired game design, but the thing with Gameloft is that the end product of its barefaced borrowing is always executed with such flair, focus and immense polish. For soccer fans especially, this should be a definite download.

That’s all the picks for this week. I’ll be back in seven days with a fresh selection of App Store recommendations.

In the meantime, what apps have you been using this week?

IK Multimedia Brings Two New Versions of GrooveMaker to App Store

IK Multimedia Brings Two New Versions of GrooveMaker to App Store

IK Multimedia has released two new applications for the iPod Touch / iPhone: GrooveMaker Techno and GrooveMaker Trance. The apps are based on the previously released GrooveMaker application which allows anyone to create and share endless tracks. The full press release follows:

IK Multimedia Releases GrooveMaker® Techno and Trance
for the iPhone/iPod Touch
Electronic music for everybody- on the go

October 2009, Modena, Italy – IK Multimedia is proud to announce the release of two new applications for the iPhone/iPod Touch: GrooveMaker Techno and GrooveMaker Trance. Both versions based on the recently released GrooveMaker remixing application, these style-based apps allow everyone to create and share non-stop techno and trance tracks for DJing, remixing, multimedia and movie soundtrack compositions on the go, in real-time, just like a professional DJ or music producer.

After the debut of the first four apps in iTunes App Stores in August 2009, GrooveMaker has quickly become one of the top downloaded remixing applications everywhere, allowing any user to create professional, full-length songs in minutes, with its unique combination of advanced remixing software and high-quality included loops’ sound content.

GrooveMaker allows for instantaneous control over 8 stereo loop tracks, making it possible to remix the included massive loop library of drums, bass, bass drums, lines, pads, percussion and effects. Its unique and patented randomization feature allows musicians to generate a vast number of remixes on the fly, with one touch, to produce millions of possible groove combinations.

Loops made in GrooveMaker can be manipulated in real-time (pan, volume, mute, solo, group and tempo) and grooves can be arranged easily by dragging and dropping to create full-length tracks. These tracks can then be saved, previewed and recalled on the iPhone/iPod touch devices or exported as hi-quality .WAV files to any computer using a Wi-Fi network.

New GrooveMaker Techno gives you the raw energy of early techno, the monobeats of yore with a touch of gritty, eerie cyberfunk. These are beats straight from the roots of electronic music, so you have all the tools to move the dance floor. Includes 4 songs, plus 1 FREE song by registering, and a total of 315 loops in 140-150-160-180 BPM ranges for 228 MB of samples.

New GrooveMaker Trance allows you to immerse yourself in a total state of trance with anathematic bass lines, progressive structures and lead melodies; a hypnotic journey with no interruption! Includes 4 songs, plus 1 FREE song by registering, and a total of 315 loops in 140-150 BPM for 230 MB of samples.

Range, pricing and availability:

The new GrooveMaker Techno and GrooveMaker Trance are already available on the Apple iTunes App Store for only $9.99/€7.99 each.

These bring the number of currently available GrooveMaker applications to six; in addition to the current GrooveMaker House, Hip-Hop ($9.99/€7.99 each) and Club ($4.99/€3.99) versions. The fully functional GrooveMaker FREE version is also already available, so everybody can download it and start making music right away!

Car Jack Streets Available For Free This Weekend

carjackstreets_free1

The last two days kind of feel like winning the lottery, the iPhone and iPod touch game lottery that is.  Yesterday NimbleBit made every single one of their games available for free, and now Tag Games has decided to make their GTA-esque Car Jack Streets available for free as well.

If you enjoyed the original Grand Theft Auto you will certainly enjoy Car Jack Streets, and that’s because some of the developers at Tag Games actually had a hand in creating that classic game.

Car Jack Streets is an expansive open environment game that features an infinite number of criminal and legitimate jobs, tons of weapons, vehicles, achievements, and an online ranking system.  Our own Matt Fox reviewed the game a while back, giving it a four out of five stars.

You can pick up Car Jack Streets for free today and tomorrow only, so don’t dilly dally, otherwise you will regret missing out on this awesome deal.  The game is normally priced at $2.99.

Apple Gobbling Up NAND Flash Memory Again

pa_semi_chips

According to AppleInsider, Apple is once again leading the way for a worldwide NAND Flash memory shortage… again:

“Taiwan-based memory module houses are moving to diversify their NAND flash suppliers to minimize procurement risk, according to industry sources,” the report said. “NAND flash supply has reportedly become tighter as major chip producers Samsung Electronics, Toshiba, Micron and Hynix Semiconductor favor demand for Apple devices.”

With the release of the iPhone 3GS, new iPod Nano/Touch, and the iTablet device rumored to be released sometime in the first half of 2010 – it’s no wonder this current shortage exists. One thing is for sure, the chip producers bend over backwards to make sure Apple gets all of the memory they need — even if it means less for other companies.

LG’s 5.1 HB954SP Blu-ray HTIB system makes room for your iPod or iPhone

by Darren Murph posted Oct 10th 2009 at 8:14AM

If you’ve somehow managed to hold out from joining into the HTIB revolution, the time for caving is upon you. LG has just tapped Sir Mark Levinson to engineer the acoustics behind its latest bundle, the HB954SP. Packing a 5.1-channel sound system that includes 1,000 total watts of power, a quintet of oval drivers and a ported subwoofer, the system gets direction from a BD-Live-enabled Blu-ray player that’s actually a fair bit more stylish than the tried-and-true black rectangle. You’ll also find a pair of HDMI inputs, an iDock function for charging and controlling your iPod / iPhone right from the BD deck, 1080p upscaling of traditional DVDs, touch sensitive controls, a USB port for loading up external media and an optical audio input. There’s nary a mention of price, but it should splash down this November for a hefty premium.

‘Meteor Blitz’ a Must Try. Lite Version and $.99 Weekend Sale

194605In our first Best iPhone Games column for September, we placed Meteor Blitz at the top of the heap with 5/5 stars. And, if for some reason you haven't already gotten the game, here's your chance to do so.

Alley Labs has introduced a 3 level Lite version of the game last night which gives you a sizable taste of this wonderfully executed space shooter. In contrast, the full version of the game includes 30 levels across 6 different worlds as well as an endless survival mode.

There was a lot we liked about the game including near-instant load times, auto-save, real-time high score ranking and great controls.

As a further incentive, Alley Labs is dropping the price of the game from $1.99 to $0.99 for this weekend.
