Apple made betas of iPhone OS 3.1 (build 7C97d) and iPhone SDK 3.1 (build 9M2736a) available to developers today on its iPhone Developer Connection Web site.

According to QuickPwn.com changes include:

  • The baseband has been updated to 5.08.01 – ultrasn0w users should not use the iPhone OS 3.1 beta, otherwise their iPhones could be permanently locked!
  • iPhone 3GS – When you’re trimming your videos you now have the option of saving the original video by tapping the “Save as copy” button.
  • Voice Control is finally working over bluetooth now!
  • When you move your icons around the iPhone vibrates
  • MMS is enabled by default but does not work for AT&T users
  • The AT&T profile is updated to 4.2
  • Improvements to OpenGL and Quartz
  • There’s now a VideoEditorController API – Allows third party apps to call up video editing UI
  • Video picker API

Jailbreakers/Unlockers Beware, 3.1 Beta Breaks Ultrasn0w

thumb-squash

The new version of the iPhone OS, including the beta released today by Apple, upgrades the iPhone’s baseband. As such, iPhone 3.1 may make it much harder to unlock your iPhone later.

The iPhone Dev Team points out “baseband updates are irreversible and you’ll lose ultrasn0w.”

The 3.0 jailbreak was one of those (rare) times where both the jailbreak and the unlock coincided (the only other time was 2.2). It’s important that people realize that *most* firmware releases aren’t like that, and you need to take steps (via the tools) to separate the firmware update from its included baseband update.

Of course, users shouldn’t have to worry about this just yet as OS 3.1 is just available to developers at this time. However, should OS 3.1 drop publicly and you need to jailbreak or unlock, you absolutely should wait until the dev team gives the OK.

Review: T-Mobile Dash 3G takes the Dash torch and runs with it

This summer is a blockbuster season for touchscreen smartphones with the Palm Pre, iPhone 3GS, Nokia N97, HTC TouchPro2, and T-Mobile myPhone. However, not everyone is crazy about touchscreen devices and they just want a solid smartphone that gets the job done in a compact form factor that is easily operated with a single hand. One of the hottest selling smartphones ever for T-Mobile has been the T-Mobile Dash. I personally used this device for about a year and have given out a couple I had to family and coworkers who still enjoy using the Dash today. T-Mobile announced the Dash 3G a couple weeks ago and I have had the chance to spend the last week and a half evaluating one of them. Actually, T-Mobile may have a tough time getting this review unit back anytime soon :) You can check out product images and software screenshots in my image gallery along with a short video of it in action and my thoughts on the device below.

The T-Mobile Dash was an almost perfect non-touchscreen smartphone with a long lasting battery, bright display, very functional keyboard, compact form factor, rock solid stability, excellent functionality as a one-handed device, and relatively low price. I know several other mobile enthusiasts that thoroughly enjoyed using the Dash even though they could use just about any other mobile device if they wanted to. I found the Dash just needed a few more things to make it an even better device, including support for 3G data networks, GPS integration, and a better camera, and I thought we lost our chance of ever seeing this upgraded model when HTC and others started focusing primarily on touchscreen devices.

Many of the people I interact with as part of the Mobius group also enjoyed using the T-Mobile Dash and we asked about this device just about every time we met with HTC. I was very pleased to hear that HTC listened and took our feedback as they created a very nice successor to the Dash with the Dash 3G. I am most likely going to have to pick one up when they become available and I am sure my wife will be taking it from me as soon as she gets a hold of that keyboard.

As I will discuss in detail, the T-Mobile Dash 3G steps up in a couple of ways and is an even better product than the T-Mobile Dash. You now get support for T-Mobile’s fledgling 3G network, the processor sees a major bump in performance, the battery gets bumped up, and a GPS receiver is included in the device. The form factor is very similar, but HTC actually significantly improved the QWERTY keyboard. The T-Mobile Dash 3G isn’t the most powerful Windows Mobile device, but that is not what it is designed to be and given the intended customer it is just about a perfect upgrade to the Dash.

Specifications

Here is a rundown of the specifications of the T-Mobile Dash 3G, with a list of the differences between it and the T-Mobile Dash shown below:

  • 2.4 inch 320

Palm Pre gets a PlayStation emulator

preps1

Oh boy. I’ve found a reason to charge my Pre back from the dead. ZodTTD, purveyor of iPhone emulators galore, has struck again by installing psx4all on his Palm Pre. Surprisingly enough, Zod says the Pre’s hardware runs the emulator way better than the iPhone 3GS. But it’s not all peaches and cream.

* There is no sound output (but it’s emulated), as Pulse Audio is required for the Palm Pre, and I have yet to support it. It will come soon.
* I have not figured out hardware rotation or scaling, or whether it is possible. Until then I am using the raw framebuffer device and blitting 320×240 software scaled.
* I figured out how to read the keypad device on the Palm Pre, though there are times it fails to give a keyup event, making keys “stick”. This is annoying and I’m looking for a workaround.
* As things progress I will have fullscreen landscape working as well.

The Pre gets PlayStation gaming and more thanks to ZodTTD (video)

If you’re familiar with the emulation scene (and let’s be honest, you are reading Engadget), then you know the name ZodTTD — the brain behind some of the best jailbroken emus for the iPhone, including variations on the PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, and most importantly… the TurboGrafx-16. Now the master-hacker has brought his goods to the Pre, cooking up a version of psx4all on the Palm device, with the aforementioned GBA and TG16 ports on the way! Interestingly, he reports that the performance on the Pre is actually better than that of the iPhone 3GS, and of course he’s hacked access to the keyboard, allowing for (more) proper control of games. There are still kinks that are being worked out (sound emulation, screen scaling, etc.), but it looks like we can expect big things in the near future. We at Engadget know everyone will rest a bit easier tonight knowing that real gaming on the Pre is at hand. We’ll hopefully be getting our hands on a version soon, but for now hit the read link for more info, and check out the full video after the break!

PlayStation Emulation Comes to Palm Pre, Runs Faster Than on iPhone [Emulation]

Jailbreaking emulation legend ZodTTD has started the ball rolling on Pre gaming by installing his PlayStation emulator, psx4all, on the smartphone—and while there are kinks to be worked out, he says it runs even faster than on iPhone.

There’s no denying the Pre has several huge advantages over the iPhone family when it comes to gaming, especially the hardware keyboard, and it looks like it won’t be lacking in the graphical department, either. The emulation is still in the early stages; there’s no sound and he hasn’t figured out the screen scaling yet, but this little demo of Wipeout XL looks incredibly smooth.

ZodTTD says a fuller, more polished version of psx4all for the Pre should be coming soon, and with any luck, this’ll be the first hurdle on the way to a substantial gaming community for the Pre. [ZodTTD via Engadget]

iPhone Dev-Team: ultrasn0w Users Avoid iPhone 3.1 Beta!

macbook_stop_jailbreak

Right in time for iPhone 3.1, the iPhone Dev-Team has begun issuing their usual warnings about jailbreak/unlock users and new firmware updates:

ultrasn0w users must stay away from official 3.1 (incl. betas) until we release the tools for it, or you’ll lose unlock!

Tempting as a tasty new beta may be, if you can’t live without your hacked iPhone, don’t hit that update button now, or any time before the iPhone Dev-Team has new, tested tools ready for you.

Once again, you’ve been warned!

Apple releases iPhone OS, SDK 3.1 betas to developers

(Credit: Apple, Inc.)

Apple released on Tuesday new beta versions of the iPhone OS 3.1 firmware and the iPhone SDK 3.1 for developers. The OS 3.1 is available for all versions of the iPod Touch and the iPhone, while the SDK 3.1 is available in versions that are compatible with Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Without seeing the update, we don’t know of the changes it brings, but we’re hoping that it contains bug fixes for problems we’ve covered here and here.

If you’ve seen and used this new update, please tell us about your experiences with it in the comments.

iPhone 3.1: Video Editing: Save As...

Early word from TiPb commenters and the Twitter show some new iPhone 3.1 features found already:

  • Non-destructive video editing means trimming a clip no longer saves over the original video but gives you the option to “Save as copy…”
  • Voice Control now works over Bluetooth
  • iPhone vibrates when moving icons
  • Updated AT&T profile to 4.2
  • Updated modem firmware to 5.08.01

Behind the scenes changes abound as well:

  • Improvements to OpenGL and Quartz.
  • APIs to allow third party apps to access videos and edit them.

Update: Yes, MMS buttons appear to be back for AT&T users, but as with early iphone 3.0 Betas, they’re non-functional on standard devices. Whether they survive to the official release this time (they were removed in 3.0 Beta 5), who knows?

Firemint Kick The Tires of the iPhone 3GS

Firemint gotten their hands on an iPhone 3GS and decided to take it for a little test drive. With it’s increased processor speed, better graphics processor, and extra memory, it’s built for killer games. The best way they came up with to test drive the 3GS was to make a special version of their fantastic racing game, Real Racing to stress it. The normal version of Real Racing has 6 cars on the track at once. Their iPhone 3GS test version has not 12, not 20, but 40 cars on the track at the same time! Take a look at the demo video below for the amazing proof — the real fun starts around 30 seconds in.

Amazing, just amazing. Looks like they might have even been able to put even more cars on the track! If you haven’t picked up Real Racing yet, what are you waiting for? It’s the best arcade game we’ve seen yet for the iPhone.

Real Racing
